Artist Statement

Kathleen TurnbullMy love for the visual arts probably started when I was in elementary school in the Northwest Territories. I like to think it was the northern environment that impacted my desire to transcribe my thoughts into lines and colour. Over the years, my eye is continually searching and observing. Whether it be in nature, or in a manufactured setting, I will look for a vignette or composition that will force me to really look and visually, mentally and physically absorb it all.

In my past profession as an interior designer, I continually manipulate colour, shape, space and texture using basic design principles. It is always a wonderful challenge to tweak those principles and apply my own design theories. I feel I do the same in my painting. I will start with what I know technically but challenge myself with the composition and the application of colour.
